Lily Aldrin is one of the main characters of the CBS sitcom "How I Met Your Mother." A kindergarten teacher and aspiring painter, Lily is one of Ted's best and oldest friends, and the wife of his best friend Marshall. She is a native New Yorker, raised in Brooklyn by her mother, Janice. She had an obsessive high school boyfriend nicknamed Scooter. She met Marshall during her freshman year at Wesleyan University in 1996 and dated him throughout her college years (Marshall being Ted's college roommate, this is also how we were initially told they met. However, it turns out Lily met Ted for the first time at a Freshmen mixer, where they kissed anonymously and were physically repulsed by each other). The three got an apartment together in New York after graduation, a situation that proved awkward for Ted as Marshall and Lily dated. Marshall and Lily became engaged in the fall of 2005, as portrayed in the series pilot. Though much of the first season was dedicated to them overcoming their mutual jitters, towards the end she revealed to Ted's then-intended Robin that she had been having second thoughts about getting married without having experienced much else of life before Marshall. Those doubts intensified, and she acted upon them, applying for a painting fellowship in San Francisco. She eventually told Ted what she had done and that decided not to go through with it, but Marshall found out she was accepted to the program by listening to a message on their answering machine. After arguing on and off, with several pause breaks in between for drinks, dinner at Red Lobster, and sex, Lily cannot promise Marshall that she will return to him after the conclusion of her three-month fellowship, and the engagement ends. By the end of the first episode of the second season, we learn Lily has returned to New York. She hides from the rest of the gang until Robin bumps into her. Having lost everything and even changed her hair color, Lily tries to restructure her fragmented life while hiding from Marshall; she even got an extremely ramshackle one-room apartment. After they re-meet their contact is filled with conflict - he assumes she had a wonderful time in San Francisco. But Lily had a miserable time without him, and they become re-engaged four episodes into the season. After nearly marrying in Atlantic City, Marshall and Lily wed in two ceremonies in the second season's final two episodes: in "Something Borrowed," they were married by Barney in a private ceremony that also included Ted and Robin because everything was going wrong with the elaborate ceremony they had planned, and then they were married once more in front of their families, now that the pressure was off. In the third season, Lily revealed that she's a compulsive shopper who's run up a great deal of credit card debt. Due to her inabilty to pay off her debts, she's denied a loan, and Lily and Marshall moved out of their shared appartment with Ted and got an appartment of their own- which was unfortunately downwind of a sewage treatment plant. FUN FACT: Lily uses shopping as a way to relieve stress.
