Now we will feel no rain
For each of us will be shelter to each other.
And now we will feel no cold
For each of us will be warmth to each other.
Now there is no loneliness
We are two bodies, but there is one life before us and one home.
When evening falls, I'll look to you and there you'll be.
And I'll take your hand and you'll take mine
And we'll turn together and we'll look to the road we travelled
to reach this--The hour of our happiness.
It stretched far behind us, and our future lies ahead--
A long and winding road where every turning means discovery
All the hopes, new laughter, shared tears,
The adventure has just begun.

Jack Harcourt Deveraux and Jennifer Rose Horton Deveraux are among the most popular couples on NBC's soap opera Days of Our Lives, whose history spans from 1988 through 2006. The two, in typical soap opera form, have been played by more than one actor/actress since their inception, but were made most famous by Matthew Ashford and Melissa Reeves.

Pre-Coupling History:

Jack:: Jack Deveraux was the spoiled, adopted son of Harper and Anjelica Deveraux, a coldly ambitious political power couple. When he first arrived in town, Jack was suffering from Hodgkin's disease. His father hired Kayla Brady to nurse him, and he fell for her. In remission and claiming Kayla as his cure, Jack proposed, and when her true love Patch rejected her, she said yes. Jack was being groomed for a roll in politics by his rich family. Though they did marry, Kayla's heart, unfortunately, for Jack, belonged to his (unbeknownst to him) biological brother, Patch. The tug-of-war between the two of them for Kayla's affections resulted in Jack's raping Kayla. When she declared her intention to divorce Jack, Kayla was poisioned and Jack was blamed. The two men got into a fight over this on the roof of Kayla's loft, and Jack tumbled off and to the ground below, and Jack's kidney ruptured in the fall. His only chance for survival was a doner kidney - provided by his biological brother, Steve. Jack, thusly, discovered that he was adopted - and that his father, Harper, had tried to poision his ex-wife to keep her from pressing charges against Jack for the rape. Harper went to jail and a heartbroken Jack comforted himself with a fling with a Horton cousin, Melissa. Gradually, he began to turn over a new leaf, even visiting Jo, his biologial mother, and giving her a pair of emerald earings. He ran for his father's senate seat against Micky Horton. Though Jack struggled with his villainous decisions, he eventually gave in to his darker side and had his adopted father broken out of jail in exchange for a political favor that would guarantee him victory. Harper didn't provide the favor - Micky defeated Jack - and worse, he kidnapped Kayla, forcing Steve to rescue her again. After Melissa Horton left him at the altar when she learned that Jack was just manipulating her to gain political acceptance, Jack's political aspirations were in shambles.

Jennifer: Jennifer Rose Horton was born during a snowstorm in 1976. In 1979, her mother Laura's mental state deteriorated in response to her recent rape, and she put little Jennifer Rose in danger by putting her on a bus alone.

In 1985, Jennifer returned to Salem as a teenager in deep trouble. She had become a rebellious runaway, a compulsive liar, and was being stalked by a rapist. Her brother Dr. Mike Horton came to her rescue. By the following year she had given up on her runaway lifestyle and moved back in with her grandparents, Tom and Alice Horton. During the summer of 1986 she began a non-intimate romance with a high school classmate Glenn Gallagher. However Jennifer inadvertently exposed Glenn's plan to uncover his coach's drug dealing. Jennifer trailed Glenn to the park and found the coach holding a gun to Glenn's head. Jennifer then enlisted the help of classmate Frankie Brady. Later when on a class trip, Jennifer and Frankie discovered they had feelings for one another. Jennifer rejected Glenn's pressure to have sex and turned to Frankie. Together, Jennifer and Frankie foiled a robbery attempt and helped bust a prostitution ring. In 1987 Jennifer's father Bill returned to Salem and tried running Jennifer's life. Jennifer rebelled by becoming engaged to Frankie, however she broke the engagement when she learned of her mother and grandmother's mental problems. Thinking she'd develop the same problems and pass it on to her own children, she broke up with Frankie. They reunited briefly, but Eve, who had a crush on Frankie, spilled the beans about an affair Frankie had while separated from Jennifer.

Early History:

Desperate to keep 'The Spectator' from printing an expose on his dirty dealings as a politician, Jack purchased a controlling share and changed his destiny. He abandoned his political goals and became a newspaperman.

Jennifer Horton was young and fairly inexperienced in the ways of life. Although she had had many puppy-love romances, Jennifer had yet to consummate them, waiting for the 'right guy'. Wide-eyed and fresh out of high school, Jennifer began to intern for Jack as a cub-reporter. Her initial feelings towards Jack were negative due to his treatment of Kayla and Melissa, but "Miss Horton" soon learned that her boss had a different side to him.

In 1989, Jennifer befriended Sally, a pregnant homeless girl who got herself arrested so she wouldn't have her baby on the streets. But the officials wouldn't let Sally keep her baby once it was born. Jack pretended to be Jennifer's husband and they offered the child Hannah a foster home. Jack soon fell in love with Jennifer but Emilio soon came to town.

Emilio/Jennifer/Jack Triangle: Jennifer's on-again/off-again relationship with former gang member and childhood sweetheart Emilio frustrated Jack because he felt she was too talented and smart to waste her life with someone he considered to be a dead-beat. Jennifer figured Jack only saw her as a kid, and tried to prove herself as a serious journalist. This, of course, got them both into hot water. Jennifer soon found herself torn between Emilio and Jack. Jennifer tried to push Jack into admitting that he loved her, but he kept pushing her away, afraid of his own past. When Jennifer was set to marry Emilio, Jack kidnapped her on her wedding day via a fire truck (complete with dalmatians). He "held" her for awhile, and when Jennifer escaped, she fell off a cliff and was knocked unconscious. Jack admitted his true feelings for her. Unfortunately, he would not repeat them when she regained conciousness, and he returned her to Emilio.

As Jack developed further into a decent human being, his self-loathing grew proportionately. More and more he began to realize that he could never be with Jennifer. He felt sure that given his own history of how he had treated women, and given his fathers' histories, he would only hurt her in the end.

The Cruise Of Deception and Jennifer's Rape:

During the 'Cruise of Deception' storyarc, Jack and Jennifer found themselved marooned on an island with Bo, Hope, Isabella, John and many other denzians of Salem. Jack had saved Jennifer's life during the boat's evacuation. Alone together at last, and despite Jennifer's foot being injured during their escape from the sinking cruise ship, they finally made love on a cave in the remote island.

They were, from that point on, technically involved, though quite a few more bumps ensued.

First, Jennifer was mistaken for Katerina Von Leuschner, her old boarding school chum, by Lawrence Alamain. This stemmed from a dating swap back when Jennifer and Katerina were teenaged best friends at boarding school. Caught up in this deception, Jennifer married Lawrence in a union of convenience. A furious Lawrence eventually found out the truth on their wedding night, and he raped Jennifer. Jack rode to the rescue, her marriage to Lawrence was annuled, and Jack and Jen became engaged. But Jennifer was unable to tell Jack about what had happened, and pulled back from any kind of intimacy. He called off the wedding; Jack was afraid Jennifer had fallen in love with someone else. While she struggled with her feelings, Jack entered into his own marriage of convenience - with Eve Donnovan.

Jack still wanted Jennifer desperately. She eventually snapped and called him a rapist when he tried to force a kiss on her to remind her of the passion between them. The kiss triggered a flashback of what happened with Lawrence, but a heartbroken Jack thought that Jennifer had finally come to her senses and begun to see that he really was a dangerous man.

Jennifer finally confessed to Jack what had happened. The revelation caused him a great deal of anguish - not only because the woman he loved had been suffering so much, but because he felt that he was no better than the man who had done it to her. Jennifer pressed charges against Lawrence and Jack stood by her side, gaining new insight as to how he had made Kayla feel during their own trial for his rape of her. The experience brought Jack and Jennifer even closer together, aided surprisingly by Kayla who urged Jack not to let his own past prevent him from being there fo Jennifer. Kayla and Shane worked with Jack and Jennifer to bring Lawrence down, and Jack admitted on the witness stand that what he had done to Kayla had truly been rape. Unlike Jack, Lawrence was convicted of marital rape and served a few years of jail time.

The Wedding, The Lean Years, and Abigail Johanna:

Jack proposed to Jennifer as soon as the trial was over, and the couple finally got married in 1991. The ceremony took place At Salem's Wild West Arena and involved a lot of slapstick. Jack got hysterical laryngitis just before the ceremony, until a dream stirred him from his period of self-doubt. The newlyweds honeymooned in Hollywood, California. Pivitoly, they made love on the set of a game show.

Unfortunately, on that same honeymoon they also met a swindler, Hawk, who wiped out their savings. The newlyweds lived hand-to-mouth, and then Jennifer figured out she was pregnant. Jack worried that he'd relapsed back into his Hodgekin's Disease, a worry that proved unfounded - then Jennifer landed a position as a talk show host beside the always-outrageous Calliope Bradford. The commute to New York, plus Jack sense of jealousy as Jennifer became the family's main breadwinner, wore on the couple, but it soon dissolved as the birth of their child approached. Abigail Johanna Deveraux was delivered by her father in the Horton Cabin, much as her own mother had been born years before.

The First Divorce, Peter DiMera, The circus: The following year, Abby was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia. Jennifer teamed up with Austin Reed to find the environmental cause of Abigail's illness. It was soon revealed that Jack was the one who had allowed the toxic waste dumping and was responsible for Abigail's illness. Overwhelmed with guilt he left Salem, and Jennifer behind.

Soon, smooth-talking Peter Blake entered the picture and conned Jennifer out of her heart. Peter was a drug trafficer and a lowlife, and when a recently-released from the sanitarium Laura found out about it, Peter tried to gasslight her back to the asylum.

Laura found refuge in the arms of a new lover - Jennifer began to try to find out who this man, named Clark, was. It turned out that Clark was actually Jack. Jennifer was devastated and went through with her marriage to Peter at the DiMera's Aremid in 1995. Jack tried continuously to prove that Peter was devious but to no avail.

A year later, Jennifer and Peter separated when she found out he had lied to her about her mother's gasslighting. Jack caught Peter with a syringe meant for Jennifer so that Peter could drug her and then take her and Abigail out of the country. Jack ended up shooting Peter and it looked like Peter had died. (Stefano switched Peter's alive body with the dead body of an old associate wearing a Peter mask.)

After one glorious Christmas with Jennifer and Abby, Jack was sent to prison for Peter's murder. She vowed her devotion, despite the DiMera threat. Jack later escaped to find Jennifer, after DiMera's henchmen kidnapped her.

The family went on the run for a while, until they joined up with a circus. Jack became a laborer, Jen the assistant in a trapeeze act. Abby struck up a good friend in the ringmaster's son. Eventually, Jack and Jennifer fled to Africa, where her father Bill was participating in an archeological dig.

Africa and The second Wedding: While in Africa, Jennifer and Jack experienced some problems with their relationship, especially when Jennifer fell for a young man named Colin Murphy...whom she didn't realize was Shawn Brady's nephew! Jack dissapeared for months at a time, and Jennifer had had enough. She fled to Ireland with Abby and undertook an assumed identity, dying her hair and using an Irish accent. She ended up getting herself in trouble, and then had to come back to Salem with Bo, who was there investigating Shawn's Irish roots. Jack soon followed her, and the two moved in together so they could look after Abigail. Jennifer initially pushed Jack away, and concentrated on relationships with first Brandon then Colin, but she and Jack couldn't resist that certain something that had always been between them. They were remarried, much to the delight of their daughter Abby.

The Death of Jack Deveraux, Takes One and Two: Jack and Jennifer were just beginning to enjoy their married life together again, and to enjoy hosting In the House, a local variety talk show that was one of Jennifer's father Bill's wedding gifts to her and Jack. Then Jennifer was dealt the harshest blow of her life when Jack was struck down in an alley behind Salem Place by the Salem Stalker, and Jennifer was forced to decide between taking him off life support and donating his organs or allowing him to continue on living through machines. Abby was unable to forgive her mother until Jennifer realized she was pregnant, but tragedy struck again when Jennifer learned that her baby would have serious mental and physical deformities, and Lexie advised her to terminate it.

Desperate to hold on to the last part of Jack she would ever have, Jennifer refused to abort her pregnancy. With the help of her new tenant and friend, Patrick Lockhart, Jennifer began looking forward to a new life with Abby and the baby. When she was nearly full term, Jennifer got a message on her computer supposedly from Jack, and took off to find him. She was picked up by a pilot who was to take her to the island of Melaswen. Unfortunately the plane crashed, and Jennifer ended up in the jungle. She was thrilled when she reunited with Jack, and together the two began planning a future for Jack Patrick Jr. (who was delivered by Patrick), but when they tried to return to Salem, Jack was presumed dead on the return voyage. Jennifer tried to move on with her life, but found it difficult because Abby could not forgive Jennifer for Jack's death.

Jennifer was almost preparing to move on when a miracle occurred and Jack was back home for real. Together, Jack and Jennifer worked on rebuilding their family, which was complete now that Abby was getting along much better with her mother.

The Death of Jack Deveraux, Take Three: Though it appeared that everything was once again rosy, Jack became ill with a mysterious disease contracted in the Melswan jungles. Advised that it was terminal, Jack tried to push his wife toward Frankie, her recently-returned-to-town first love. Eventually, Jack began to feel that he was just prolonging Jennifer's suffering, and faked his own death in a car accident so she could move on.

London Bound: Jennifer did indeed move on with Frankie, and the two planned to marry a few months after Jack's presumed death - much to the continued angst of Abby, who began to rebel beside her new friend, bad seed Chelsea. Jack checked himself into a hospital out of town and prepared for death - a plan averted when he found out about some new experimental drugs which could send his disease into remission. He was shocked to find that the nurse caring for him was his presumed - dead brother, Steve! Though Steve was amnesiac, he agreed to help Jack get the experimental drugs. The two men went on a road trip back to Salem, where Jack stopped Jennifer's wedding to Frankie and began taking the experimental pills - administed by Doctor Kayla Brady! Jennifer was shocked and understandably mad, and she continued to stick with Frankie.

Uncerainty hung over the picture for awhile. Then the murder of Eve, a cop on the take, reignited Jack's newsman instincts, perked him up, and sent him off on a whirl-wind adventure with Jennifer on his heels that ended with the couple making love in a cave.

Jack and Jen managed to recover an address book that linked Eve back to Kate Roberts, and thus Kate to the dissapearence of evidence in Chelsea's vehicular homicide trial (she was accused of running over and accidentally killing her half-brother Zack Brady). During the trip Jack had regained his full viggor and strength, but had collapsed and was taken back to Salem in a helicopter. Lexie ran some tests on him and it was discovered that his disease was in remission! Jennifer gently dumped Frankie and recommitted to Jack, and their investigative work was rewarded by a job offer from Jack's old gopher (and now boss) Verne to head up the Spectator's London branch - with a job thrown in for Jennifer, too. Though Abby elected to stay behind and finish college in Salem, an excited Jack and Jen quit their jobs and took a young Jack Junior with them overseas on September 22nd, 2006. A year later, Abby moved to join them.
